Here is some more on Cerruty, and some on a
professional runner Bill Emmerton.
In 26 May 1968 George Perdon broke the Portsea to
Melbourne 60 mile record of Cerruty- running 6:35:42 - splits of 40 miles in
4:17:42, 50 miles in 5:22:55.
Cerruty was reputedly at one time to have been one
of only three Australians to have run 100 miles. This he did at the ange of
50.
Bill Emmerton professional runner - Death
Valley 125 miles in 1968.
Emmerton - 47 years old, a six footer from
Tasmania, weighing over 12 stone,completed the run with badly blistered feet in
3 days, 3 hours, 23 minutes
Also in 1968 he was reported to have run the 200
miles of Death Valley in 3 days 15 hours and 40 minutes
Emmerton's career included two runs across Death
Valley, 100 miles in 20hours 41 minutes, 125 miles in 26 hoursm and 168 miles in
36 hours, John O'Groats to Land's End in 18 days and 1000 miles from Houston to
Cape Kennedy to honour the astronauts, and Adelaide to Melbourne in 10
days
